Canned Food Drive 2017

We CAN make a difference! From November 30 to December 7, Peninsula and Rancho Del Mar students collected over 7,600 nonperishable food items. Cans were collected in the students’ third period classes. Mr. Engle’s class collected over 2,000 cans, coming in first place and receiving the coveted trophy. PVPHS’s four leadership classes (Service Learning Leadership, PLUS, ASB, and Link Crew) united to pick up cans from each classroom the last day of the drive. All of the collected food were donated to the LA Food Bank—where Peninsula High School has been one of the biggest donors for the past couple of years.

The week leading up to the canned food drive kickoff, Service Learning Leadership researched the hunger problem in the United States. Learning that one in six Americans are food insecure, SLL knew that they needed to spread the message of why the food drive was so important. By posting flyers, speaking at faculty meetings, and making a promotional video, the Canned Food Drive Committee publicized the drive to PVPHS.

The Canned Food Drive was a great way to kick off the holidays and the season of giving. It was amazing to see the community band together with love and generosity. A special thanks to the LA Food Bank, Rancho Del Mar High School, the wonderful Canned Food Drive Committee, Service Learning Leadership, PLUS, ASB, and Link Crew, for helping to make this year’s Canned Food Drive an awesome success!
