SLL Alum Interns With P.S. ARTS
Updated: Oct 19, 2019
Hi!
My name is Maddi and I took Ms. Myrick’s Service Learning Leadership class in 2014. This past summer I had the privilege of using a lot of the things I learned in SLL while at my internship. I interned at P.S. ARTS, a nonprofit based in Venice, whose mission is to “[improve] the lives of children by providing arts education to underserved public schools and communities.”
My experience at P.S. ARTS was amazing. I divided my time between two main jobs. One half of my internship was with the Programs Department. I helped jumpstart this year’s programs, especially the Inside Out Community Arts programs. I learned so much from the Programs Department. They are such a great team, and I got to participate in professional development, curriculum building, and staff meetings, which taught me a lot about arts education and the nonprofit sector. I also had the pleasure of working with the events team on our end-of-summer fundraiser called Taste of Venice. I was responsible for the silent auction and eventually solicited over ten thousand dollars in donations. I know the event is going to be amazing, and I can’t wait to see all the great things P.S. ARTS is going to do in the future. I encourage you to learn more about P.S. ARTS HERE!
The Los Angles County Arts Commission sponsored my internship. The program the LACAC has set up for interns in amazing. I got to participate in arts events all over Los Angeles and meet interns from around the county. One of my favorite events was the Arts Summit day that was held in Culver City. We got to experience different art spaces around the city, as well as meet professionals in the industry. I know I would like to eventually end up in nonprofits because I am extremely passionate about helping others. Getting to meet other people my age who are interested and succeeding in what I want to do was really motivating and exciting. I can’t thank the LACAC enough for this opportunity. These are all of the LACAC Interns from around the county at the Arts Summit Day in Culver City. Every intern worked at a nonprofit in Los Angeles County. It was amazing getting to meet all the different people interested in the same things I am.

I am so proud of the work I completed for Taste of Venice! It is going to be such a cool event and I know the money raised is going to help so many kids.

One of the most rewarding pieces of my internship was getting to sit in on staff meetings every Tuesday morning. I learned so much just from listening to the rest of the staff and absorbing how much work goes into running a nonprofit.

Every other Friday the staff participated in art projects to test them for the upcoming year. We use these projects at our Family Night programs where children and their families get to experience art together! They were always super fun projects and a great way to staff bond.
You can read a little bit more about my work on the blog I did for the P.S. ARTS site as well.
